Connecting a wireless laptop to the Internet.?
My sister just bought a brand new laptop from Best Buy, because you need a computer (shes away from the College). But right now our family is confused as to how they use the Internet even without the cables. I read about google how to connect a wireless router to our home DSL modem and nothing else. But what happens when shes away from home and is in school? She can not take our Internet service at home for college, how will you get the internet there? It is also the computer my parents. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp? ... And when I passed through the device manager I found what seems to have something to do with wi-fi "Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini Card" What exactly you need to buy / Do?
first .. im guessing they have no wireless router, a DSL modem? and the first thing you want to do if you want a wireless connection (laptop, desktop, and are far from modem) is to buy a wireless router. should say how to connect the various cables and then DSL the PC ... etc. Otherwise, you might try searching with this particular model and see how it works. your laptop has a wireless card inside and so he said: "Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini Card" So yes, basically, if you go to school .. must have a Wi-Fi (AP wireless) and could not connect there. im not sure if the network is encrypted (WEP/WPA/WPA2) but it can go and ask at the college ... somewhere, and get key .. If your free internet access on campus. Anyway, I made that kind of long-shes, but basically good, with all the wireless .. but if you want wireless in your home, you need to buy a wireless router (Netgear, D-Link, Linksys) are the best options for routers / wireless adapters:)!

How do you connect a nintendo wii to the internet and get free wii points?
My kids got a nintendo wii for christmas and want to get it connected to the internet. My wife says she is having difficulty (I am currently working away from home). The kids also say they can get free wii points to buy games online if they connect but I don't know how that works. Is the procedure relatively straight-forward? We have a wireless set-up using a netgear router. I am not super knowledgeable when it comes to routers and such but managed to get our laptops and my iphone connected previously. Is there anything in particular I need to know?
Most routers will connect to the wii but there are a few that won't. Read the box of your router and make sure it supports these broadcast standards: 802.11G/ 802.11B (or mixed)
If you have an access list set up in your router you will need to add the MAC address of your wii. You can find your mac address in the wii settings under the internet menu. Click on the button that says 'console information'.
Do you have WEP or WPA encryption on your network? If so you will need the passkey. Go into your Wii settings and go to internet >> connection settings >> choose a connection >> wireless connection >> search for an access point. See if you can find the name of your network. You will be prompted for a passkey if you have WEP or WPA.
To claim the free points, you use the connection ambassador promotion. You find this in the wii shop channel. The link is on the bottom left when you enter it the channel. Some Instructions on how to get them are here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSjf8kxlVPk
You can also get free points by registering your nintendo products if you are in Europe or Japan on club nintendo. Actually you get stars first which you then swap for points (It's a little complicated).

I have heard a rumour, (other more pc literate people may be able to confirm this), that you can purchase a little gadget in any pc shop called a ‘Dongle’. A lot of students use these apparently and they enable you to pick up (for free I might add) any internet connection in the area.

Most hotels have internet hook ups, many offer service for free but some charge minimal fees. Most Chamber of commerces and libraries now offer free wifi. Some cities have free wifi over the WHOLE city. Most coffee shops give free wifi or you could go to to a commercial "hotspot" like at Starbucks.
http://www.wififreespot.com/ is a great site to research BEFORE your trip. Cut and Paste your destination cities into a wordpad document so you can view the site list even when off line

you need to find a wireless hotspot and no you don’t need any other gadgets as you have said that the laptop is already wirelessly enabled.

In the UK you can access Wireless Hotspots at many locations like hotels, cafes etc and are supplied by access providers. These hotspots will allow you to connect to the Internet once a fee has been paid and for a period of time. If you are only needing to ge online for a small period then McDonalds are the best bet, and whose access is provided by BT Openzone.
I have found that those supplied by The Cloud or BT Openzone offer the best value for money in terms of cost and period of use. SwissCom are the most expensive.
You may want to purchase a Wi-Fi finder which will allow you to find an access point without the need to switch on your laptop. Have a look on Ebay or look around for these.

I too have just bought a wireless enabled laptop myself (Intel Centrino).
I haven’t yet set up my wireless network at home yet, but i have been able to connect to the Internet at Uni, using the free campus wifi.
All you do is go to ‘start’ and click ‘connect to’ look at ‘show all connections’ and wireless routers will be identified by your computer and you should be able to connect by clicking the connection. But please be aware that as the wifi is open to all (all laptops can join the connection) it IS NOT security enabled and as such you should avoid such identity sensitive surfing such as Internet Banking and buying things, as some ‘smart Alec’ might be able to access what your doing and typing (I saw it on Real Hussel – BBC3).
When i connect to wifi at Uni (using my wifi ready laptop running on Windows Vista) i just go down to the bottom of the screen (next to the clock on your desktop tray) and right hand click on the icon that looks like two computers and select the router (its says, in my case, ‘LeedsMet’ to identify itself).
Hope this helps.
